Port Arthur, a step back in time

Are you looking for an adventure that combines history, stunning scenery, and a touch of the eerie? Then look no further than Port Arthur, Tasmania. This former convict settlement turned tourist destination is a must-visit for anyone traveling to Australia's island state.

Located on the Tasman Peninsula, about a 90-minute drive from Hobart, Port Arthur is a place that is steeped in history. Once home to some of the most dangerous criminals in Australia, today it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that attracts visitors from all over the world. We drove down early in the morning to make sure we had enough time to explore the site comfortably. A little tip would be to rug up and prepare for all weather conditions as when we arrived it was lovely and sunny, gradually as the day went on the rain and wind soon followed! Make sure you book your tickets before and if you want to go on the ferry ride also remember to book.

The best way to explore Port Arthur is by taking a guided tour of the site, where you will learn about the harsh conditions that the convicts endured and the stories of the people who made this place their home. You can also take a boat tour around the harbor, which provides a unique perspective and stunning views of the surrounding landscape. Our tour guide was very passionate and made the tour so enjoyable and encapsulated our attention with the stories and people from the prison.

One of the most iconic landmarks in Port Arthur is the Penitentiary building, which was once used as a punishment block for the convicts. Today, it serves as a museum that houses exhibits on the history of the site.

But Port Arthur is not just about history. The natural beauty of the surrounding landscape is breathtaking. The coastline is rugged and wild, with towering cliffs and crashing waves.

For those who are feeling brave, there are also ghost tours available at night, where you can explore the darker side of Port Arthur's history. These tours are not for the faint of heart, but they provide a unique and spine-tingling experience that is sure to stay with you long after you leave Tasmania. We tried to book ghost tour tickets, which I must say I wasn’t looking forward too as I was a tad scared, unfortunately we didn’t have any luck booking the tickets which we tried pretty early on. If you are interested in going on the ghost tour my tip would be to book tickets well in advance as it seems to be very popular in the site.

If you're planning a trip to Tasmania, make sure that Port Arthur is on your itinerary. This unique and fascinating destination is a must-visit for anyone who loves history, nature, or just a good adventure. And who knows, with its combination of history, beauty, and intrigue,
